Bonomo's Turkish Taffy commercial from 1950's
This is a classic 1-minute TV commercial for Bonomo's Turkish Taffy, a candy that was made in Coney Island back then and this ad was filmed in Brooklyn's fabled shore resort at Steeplechase Park. Sadly today, the park is but a memory as are all the rides seen in the spot (though the Parachute Jump tower is still standing minus its ride mechanism). The Thunderbolt rollercoaster seen at the end is the coaster that had a cameo appearance in Woody Allen's movie "Annie Hall" but was torn down over a decade ago in notoriously sneaky fashion by Mayor Rudy Giuliani as a favor to the Brooklyn Cyclones baseball team whose new ballpark was going up across the street on the former site of Steeplechase Park.

Could the rides come to an end at Rye Playland?
Rye Playland located in the Northeast suburbs of New York City is the last complete historical amusement park in the region, and it's future could be in doubt as the Westchester county government seeks proposals for redeveloping the park, leaving all options open including shrinking or even closing it down, leaving the question of its seven landmark rides (including a Carmel-carved carousel and an Illions-carved Derby Racer, one of two left in the entire country) up in the air.

R.I.P, William Mangels III
Last night I received a phone message from Dorothy Mangels that her husband Bill III passed away...back in April (weekend of NJ DooDah Parade). She had been in California for awhile since then but returned to Florida. Not being connected to the Internet, "Dot" is only now getting to word out to her late husband's friends and asked me to convey the news to the carousel, amusement park and Coney Island communities.

Bill's grandfather ran the largest manufacturing company of amusement rides at the time, a hundred years ago, and was based in Coney Island. Many classic hand-carved carousels as well as kiddie rides built by WF Mangels Co. still exist and operate today around the country. In fact just this past Friday when I was strolling through Canobie Lake Park NH I was thinking about Bill as we walked by the handful of kiddie rides that bore the Mangels name on faceplates.

With my encouragement, Bill made an appearance in 2005 at the first Coney Island Hall of Fame induction ceremony in New York to receive the honors for his grandfather's place in Coney Island and amusement park history. He was interviewed on TV by Rapid T. Rabbit for the occaision, and recalled painting carousel horses in his grandfather's factory.

I was honored to know him and be a friend.

I know they're extremely thrilling but...
Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey announced that their Great American Scream Machine roller coaster will be shut down permanently this coming July 18 to make way for a new attraction next year.

It's only with that posted announcement did I realize that the coaster's initials were G.A.S.M.

Pepsi is sponsoring community grants; the 10 projects that receive the most votes before the end of the month will be getting $50,000 from them. The restoration of Conneaut Lake Park's Blue Streak is one of the projects in the running. $50,000 would go a very long way toward getting it fixed up again. Please...Vote here every day, pass the link around, and let's help get this wonderful classic coaster running again!

Intimidator at Carowinds in 2010
To follow up Kings Dominion's announcement of Intimidator 305, today Cedar Fair announced their next new coaster also opening up next year for Carowinds, Intimidator! Not as tall as Intimidator 305, but at a height of 232 feet tall and speeds of 75 MPH, it should be fun. Plus the layout looks very fun with lots of air time. I'm excited since this one is only about three hours away from me! ^_^

Check out the details, artist renderings, and videos at http://www.intimidator.carowinds.com

Cyclone Coaster Riders versus Brit BO Rule
NY Daly News 8/19/09 - Cyclone Riders versus Brit BO Rule

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2009/08/19/2009-08-19_brit_bo_ban_stinks__ny...

A British amusement park's idea to ban roller coaster riders from raising their arms because of stinky body odors isn't going down well in Coney Island.

"We all know about the British and their hygiene; it is their problem, not ours," Queens limo driver Elis Gomez, 52, harrumphed after getting off the Cyclone.

"A roller coaster is a two-minute ride. So what? The wind is blowing through your arms," said Gomez, smelling of baby powder and Dolce & Gabbana cologne.

British officials said yesterday that visitors to Britain's Thorpe Park in Surrey can no longer raise their arms on popular rides under the new "Say No to B.O." rule.

"I would be angry," said Leo Collaguazo, 11, who rode the Cyclone waving his arms.

The British rule kicks in a day after England's temperatures hit a modest 84.

New York marked its first heat wave of the summer on Tuesday, when the mercury hit 90 degrees for the third straight day, the National Weather Service said.

The brief glimpse of the sultry season could be over for now. Temperatures will cool to 89 today. Rain is expected to ruin the weekend.

The high for Wednesday and Friday is expected to be 87. Saturday should top out at 86.

"The heat wave is terrible," said Leo's mom, Cynthia Collaguazo, 37. "[But] I don't smell," she said, sniffing her armpits.
